Ninni Arini comes from Sicily. And he is a singer-songwriter.
With these two sentences we can already have a fairly clear idea of his poetics and his music. Today it is not common to meet artists like Ninni Arini: artists who stand out for their ability to perpetuate a great Italian tradition, which has its origins very far away in time.
What strikes you immediately are the lyrics, never banal, never predictable, which speak of earth, wind, sea, life, without ever falling into banality, without ever combining the word "love" with the word "heart", as too many do. recent Italian music has accustomed us to hearing. “E se il mare”, “I poeti”, “Regina della Sera”, the beautiful “Un oceano di carte” tell stories in which everyone manages to find a little piece of themselves.
And then the music. This is a record in which very few instruments play. Two guitars, a double bass, a small set of percussion and a flugelhorn and then a piano and a cello: all played live, thus managing to recreate the emotion of a sunny and very Mediterranean sound. It is a music that in many ways can literally make you breathe the air of the sea of Marsala, where Ninni comes from and where Ninni lives.
In his first album for Velut Luna, Ninni also wanted to pay homage to two great Italian authors of the past, Fabrizio De Andrè and Luigi Tenco, proposing three so-called covers of rare intensity, but above all of rare interpretative originality: that is, making these his own songs. And here is an unreleased “Bocca di rosa” in swing style, a heartfelt “Tu non hai capito niente” and an affectionate “Ragazzo mio”.
Finally, to close the album, a surprise, which should remain such: so it should be discovered by listening to the album carefully…
